Well, this is turning-out to be a long thread so I think I'll add my 2 cents.
I'm a big supporter of modular standards.  But practically speaking, it isn't
likely that Conan's GMLTC modules are going to be run with many other-standard
modules in the near future.  The regionalized clubs just don't get together
that often.  By the time they do, it will be time to rebuild the layout again
and we can revisit the issue at that time.  Lego trains are fundamentally
different from scale trains in that they can be rebuilt with relative ease so
layouts get rebuilt frequently.  If we do run together with another club then
I'm sure both the clubs would build adaptor modules.

Another point I'd like to raise is that the GMLTC is slightly different from
most other Lego train clubs in the sheer number of bricks they use.  The
average joe/jane (read potential module builder) just doesn't have that many
bricks to build even a single module more than a few bricks high.  In order to
be widely used a modular standard should have the track a lot closer to the
table.

I know it's true for me, I just had a rather heated offline exchange with John
G, which is rather odd, he doesn't usually get excited, I must really be
getting under his collar.
