Thanks for that Carl, I enjoyed your post (although I've not read the follow
up URLs yet) and tend to agree with your sentiment. The notion of choosing
who you fancy seems absurd; I mean how many of us end up with the partners
we do because we "chose" to fancy them? Attraction seems to be one of these
things that just is; as has been demonstrated in this thread, attempts to
justify why one fancies a particular type of person in any absolute sense
are doomed to failure and circular argument.
Another thing that confuses me is why people get their knickers in a twist
so much about gay folks; what harm do they do after all? There have been
comparisons made in this thread comparing resisting the urge to commit a
homosexual act as equivalent to a married individual resisiting the urge to
commit adultery; to my mind the comparison is invalid as the former involves
no harm to another person whereas the latter almost certainly does. Another
imbalance is that the insistence that a gay person abstain will condemn them
to a lonely life without a partner, something obviously not the case with
prohibition on adultery where by definition the person already has a
partner.
"Lifestyle" is something else that seems to have cropped up frequently; it
seems to have derogatory implications and certainly implies choice. To me
lifestyle refers to whether or not you go to the gym or shops on Saturday
mornings and other fairly modifiable things; to my mind a partner is not
your lifestyle, they are your life!
I'm not sure really where you are coming from Kirby; if you are neither
homophobic nor Christian then what is the problem? I'd guess that someone
you know has recently "come out" and you or someone close to you is having
some difficulties with this, but I may well be wrong. In any case I have
come across Christians who have no problem with homosexual people; one
stated that if God decides to make people homosexual then who is he to
argue? Something else I've come across amongst several is the notion that
Paul is not really the best advocate of Jesus's philosophy and is considered
a bit of a bigot and nutter.
It seems to me there is actually relatively little in the bible condemning
homsexuality, and indeed if you were to take everything in the bible
literally you'd have to get up to all sorts of crazy things these days... I
believe there is a good document circling round the Internet to this
purpose.
