How about these real candidates for the lugnet.cad.* hierarchy?
lugnet.cad Unchanged, except for possible loss of
content to groups below
lugnet.cad.dat Unchanged
lugnet.cad.dev.parts Parts development and publishing
lugnet.cad.dev.apps Software development
But this still splits discussion of software between two groups. Bug
reports and suggestions go to lugnet.cad, with follow-up discussion of
possible fixes and ideas. But further discussion might possibly go to
lugnet.cad.dev.apps. And 'apps' is something of a high target for some
programs. Maybe 'software' is better.
So maybe
lugnet.cad General discussion
lugnet.cad.dat DAT files
lugnet.cad.parts Parts development, voting discussion. This
is the mailing list target.[1]
lugnet.cad.software Software-focused discussion. Bug reports,
help requests, future ideas.
would be better?
No matter what we do, if some people stay on as mailing-list
subscribers, and we split content across several ng's, there will be a
certain amount of confusion. We *could* subscribe everybody to
everything (by default). I've been assuming that before the 'big
switch', people would be able to opt out of the automatic subscription.
I know I don't need to be subscribed--I'll just read the new groups in
my newsreader.
My one misgiving is that parts updates are currently identified as being
published by the L-CAD group. L-CAD has no existence outside of the the
mailing list. In the above hierarchy, where does L-CAD exist? With the
migration to lugnet, do the parts updates become less the product of
L-CAD, and more the product of Terrell Keller? Not that Terry doesn't
deserve *tons* of credit for the work he does putting those things
together. I'm more concerned about it putting more burden and stress on
him as a focal point. This is why I was originally thinking of a
lugnet.cad.l-cad group.
Steve
[1] 'target', not 'gateway'. The idea is to move all the subscriptions
to lugnet, and not have a separate mailing-list, right?
