Would it be possible for whoever is running the lego-robotics <-> lugnet

address instead of lugnet.robotics@lugnet.com to the mailing list?

It would be possible, yes -- (and actually very easy) -- but doing so may
open up a can of worms.  I'll give more details below, and maybe you'll have
some ideas to suggest.

This is a pain in the butt when the people posting via nntp don't put
an e-mail address ANYWHERE in their posting...

Everyone posting via NNTP actually does put e-mail addresses in, but the
newsserver gateway re-writes the 'From' headers in order to erase their
original e-mail address (on purpose).  The original e-mail addresses of
lugnet.robotics posters actually are still contained in the messages you
receive from lego-robotics@crynwr.com -- but they're hidden from view if you
have full-headers turned off.  (Check the 'Original-From' field.)

I agree, it's a pain in the butt for both sides of the equation.  Here's why
it's done this way:

There is a special e-mail address lugnet.robotics@lugnet.com which is
subscribed to the lego-robotics@crynwr.com mailing list.  The ezmlm server
running at crynwr.com accepts any e-mail from lugnet.robotics@lugnet.com and
redistributes it to the lego-robotics mailing list.

Conversely, lego-robotics@crynwr.com is subscribed to the lugnet.robotics
group via the news-by-mail gateway.

In each case, if the 'From' header were left unchanged, then the respective
servers at each end would bounce any messages from the people it didn't
recognize -- which is many in both cases -- and the lists on each side would
be full of obvious holes.

One solution might be for the two servers to communicate with one another
and exchange subscription information so as not to bounce messages.  This is
conceivably possible, but I can't say that I understand the ramifications
w.r.t. ezmlm or the mechanics of subscription-exchanging.  ezmlm would need
the capability to add list-subscriptions that are write-only (as opposed to
read/write).  Many mailing list packages don't support read-only
subscriptions, much less write-only.  (Maybe ezmlm does; I don't know.)

In any case, I don't mean to suggest that a better way isn't possible; I'm
just not aware of any reasonable path to a better way.  (Technical
suggestions are of course eminently welcome!)
