If the new ng is specific to Robot Arena (which sounds like a cool
idea), it could be named:

lugnet.robot-arena
lugnet.loc.robot-arena
lugnet.events.robot-arena
lugnet.gaming.robot-arena[1]

or even:

lugnet.robotics.robot-arena

This is a hard call.  IMO, Robot Arena is 100% robotics and 100%
competition.  So it could either go in a hierarchy for robotics or a
hierarchy for game-events.  One thing, also IMO, lugnet.robotics is an
odd bird, since it is very mailing-list related[2], so I lean away from
adding subgroups under it.

If a group is needed for general discussion of gory or non-gory robotics
meets (rather than specific events), then maybe
lugnet.robotics.competition makes more sense.

[1] In this case, the 'gaming' charter would be to cover physical events
of people getting together (either physically or through the internet)
and playing games or participating in competitions.  It would not
include discussion of various software or RPGs written to use LEGO.

[2] If you ever want to set up lugnet.maillist.robotics and
lugnet.maillist.lcad (to echo L-CAD), I am there.  Although I'd expect
in the future SIGs will just get their own ng, and people will e-mail
subscribe through lugnet.

This is an informal call for discussion regarding the creation of a focused
newsgroup/mailing-list for _Robot_Arena_ combat events.  The LEGO Mindstorms
Robot Arena homepage (not sponsored by The LEGO Group) is located at:

  http://www.azimuthmedia.com/RobotArena/

and takes place in San Jose in March.  Spin-off competitions are being
organized in places such as Los Angeles, Austin, Sarasota FL, and the UK.

Nate Burgess, Robot Arena creator and organizer of the San Jose event, and
David Chen, organizer of the Los Angeles event, are excited about having a
dedicated newsgroup for this; so this is not a CFD on whether to create a
new newsgroup, but on what to call it.

However, it is also a CFD on whether to create a more general sibling-group
for "milder" (i.e., non-combat) competitions in addition to a Robot
Arena-specific newsgroup.  For example, a robotics league in Sarasota,
Florida holds a LEGO Mindstorms "Rug Runners" Competition...

...with other school-sponsored competitions in other cities becoming
increasingly likely.

Some possibilities for names are:

  lugnet.robotics.arena
  lugnet.robotics.robot-arena
  lugnet.robotics.combat
  lugnet.robotics.combat.arena
  lugnet.robotics.compete
  lugnet.robotics.compete.arena
  lugnet.robotics.compete.combat
  lugnet.robotics.compete.general
  lugnet.robotics.competition
  lugnet.robotics.competitions

And some possible charters:

  if Robot Arena-specific:
The Robot Arena Tournament (a fan-created combat event based on the
LEGO MINDSTORMS™ RIS):  Discussions, planning, collaboration,
     advocacy, etc.

  if combat-specific:
Combatant (destructive, gory) events using the LEGO robotics
components (for example the LEGO MINDSTORMS™ RIS):  Discussions,
     planning, collaboration, advocacy, etc.

  if generic "PG" events:
General non-combatant competitive events using the LEGO robotics
components (for example the LEGO MINDSTORMS™ RIS):  Discussions,
     planning, collaboration, advocacy, etc.

Nate Burgess suggests  lugnet.robotics.robot-arena  for all combat-related
LEGO, and  lugnet.robotics.competitions  for non-combatant tourneys
(especially K-12 school-sponsored).

David Chen concurs but suggests lugnet.robotics.competition (singular rather
than plural) for the less-gory affairs.
