We need to continue to pressure the entire LEGO company to start
doing a better job or things are going to get worse before they get better.
Personally, I feel a sense of obligation to point out the all flaws, cracks,
weak links, leaky bulkheads, warped floor boards and carpet stains I can to
them.

How do you do this pointing out? Is it more than posting on LUGNET? (I ask
because it seems you don't think they listen here, so all these posts would
be pointless, right?)

I guess we (Lego Community as a whole) need to either:

a) boycott Lego

A *sometimes* effective consumer tool.

or

b) everybody flood Brad, and others at Lego Direct (spam their personal
mail accounts) with our opinions until they either forward them to the
right channels or decide to something about it.

I strongly disagree with this suggestion.  I don't think that's a fair move
at all.  To be completely honest, I recently sent my first email directly to
Brad's account and in some ways I wish I hadn't.  I have said before that he
has not requested direct emails and I don't think we should hound him that way.

LEGO has hinted that they at least pay attention to LUGNET.  They provided a
one-time financial gift to LUGNET.  They allow their staff to post to LUGNET
under their LEGO.com addresses.  For some reason, they don't open up their
own website to discussion forums, so for now, this is the place to vent and
express opinions.  Of course, that's just my opinion.

I don't think all the "new" stuff put out in the last couple years has
helped Lego Direct put out a better selection of bulk items.
But some have posted that if you want grey bricks, stock up on
guarded inns, and part them out, and sell the pieces you don't need.

I don't want Guarded Inns, I want grey (and other) bricks.  I don't want or
need the headache of selling off parts I didn't want to buy in the first place.

I am also curious at what set will be put out next in the Legends line
/Classic Line-up.  It was disheartening to see that Lego refusal to put
out the monorail sets back out / I guess they were too lazy to find an
outsourcing manufacturer to make the motors..... <sigh>

Too many trains already. Time to move on to another theme.

Lastly, the Ford analogy is a bit weak.....

A bit, but I tried to keep it simple so that people would realize that
yelling "Rah Rah LEGO Direct" is all well and good, but if the tree rots at
the roots or in the trunk, then the branch that LEGO Direct sits on will not
support its own weight.  There, is that a better analogy?  ;)

considering that since HP (movie) came out, Lego HP sets have sold real
well.  I don't think Lego is in danger of going out of business in 2001.
Next year, that may be a different story.

Which was why I said:

If there isn't another significant license deal (a la Star Wars or Harry
Potter) in the works, then it's my prediction that the LEGO company is
destined to be the #2 seller in the market of plastic construction bricks
before this decade is out.

Even though my real feeling is that things will get much worse than that.

Regards,
Allan B.
