Mike, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I feel it's only fair to
state this:
If the LEGO company as a whole doesn't soon pull up its socks, there won't
be any LEGO Direct, there won't be any bulk parts and there won't be any
more cypress trees.
LEGO Direct cannot stand alone and survive; they are a division of the
mother company that esentially feeds of its production and distribution
network. We need to continue to pressure the entire LEGO company to start
doing a better job or things are going to get worse before they get better.
Personally, I feel a sense of obligation to point out the all flaws, cracks,
weak links, leaky bulkheads, warped floor boards and carpet stains I can to
them. I am honestly saddened at what they're doing to themselves and I only
hope that in some tiny way I can raise a little red flag.
As an analogy, think of Joe Consumer who likes to drive Ford Mustangs. But
then Ford starts making and trying to sell snowboards with their logo on
them. They don't realize that Joe has always enjoyed buying their cars, not
their logo. Ford fails to sell enough snowboards and goes bankrupt. Think
there will be any more Mustangs for Joe to buy?
In case my analogy isn't crystal clear... LEGO = Ford and LEGO Direct =
Mustang. No Ford, no Mustang. No LEGO, no LEGO Direct.
If there isn't another significant license deal (a la Star Wars or Harry
Potter) in the works, then it's my prediction that the LEGO company is
destined to be the #2 seller in the market of plastic construction bricks
before this decade is out.
Of course the good news is that they will be the #1 seller in the market of
wristwatches with the LEGO brand name on them. These will be sold in dollar
stores across the country so don't feel any pressure to stock up just yet.

Of course they don't, but no one wants to admit it. It's easier to keep
saying "something big is coming" or "new things are just around the corner".
Here's a little analogy to that kind of marketing. For years the X-Files TV
show promised us that "The truth is out there". And for years I tuned in
waiting and waiting to find out what the big secret was. Guess what? The
big secret was that there was no big secret. And guess what? I stopped
watching.
People will only wait sooooooooooooo long for this type of action to occur.
LEGO needs to kick some of its promises into high gear and start delivering.
The sad fact is that Megablocks is already delivering some sets that rival
or squash the quality being pumped out by LEGO. I'd buy these sets, if only
they had the LEGO brand name (and brick quality). So I have two options:
1) Keep waiting
2) Stop watching
Does the company think that we have infinite patience? Are they willing to
take that gamble?
