I think that a more accurate measurement of size would be running feet of
track along one trip around the loop. A 22'x4' layout is smaller than a
22'x20'. Even better measurement would be actual layout area, which could
be measured in square feet or baseplate counts.
GMLTC layout is currently 16 modules, isn't it? 4 are 45"x45" and 12 are
45"x30". That is 108 large gray baseplates, or 168.75 square feet, which is
easily long enough to handle an 8 wide train without chasing the tail.
Remember, chasing the tail is based on length of the train and a heavier (8
wide) train will overcome the magnets at a shorter overall length than a 6
wide would. Even so, it will have enough to make a fairly good length
train.
Hey J.N. - Are you growing because you just have too many bricks over at
Conan's and want to put more into modules or are you worried that within 16
months it will be #2 in scope? My garage will actually handle a 24 module
layout, so that is what I am gunning for. 144 Large gray baseplates ~ 225
sq. ft. Once again, easily enough for some 8s. If they don't convert to
your size, you could always move out here. ;-) We really have to get our
layouts together some time.
