Sometimes I really can't understand the exact point that people want to come
up with those type of conclusions, because, simply checking out the prior
examples of same kind, which are already implemented with the ongoing
system, just show the solution OBVIOUSLY.
At the very beginning of the discussion, several people suggested adding
two separate dat files for the top half and bottom half of the dinghy, and a
hard-colored shortcut for the complete thing. Then the most obvious
objection appeared immediately: "What we'll do if there would be any other
colors like tan?"...Hey, there is no need to wait..There is already a pink
version of it, just check the 1998 bellville sets.
Actually, my purpose is not showing this objection has a point, but that it
is really pointless. What about the MINIFIG SHORTCUT? All the minifigs of
the Lego Universe are the same color ones as represented by this shortcut?..
Or, all of them wearing police caps and airtanks?...
Anyway...Actually I decided not involved in such (anal retentive?)
discussions anymore, but, besides the above things (I tried to find a
solution with your (i,e.listers) point of view above, not mine), what is
the exact purpose of LDRAW parts?..Being used in a CAD type program to
prepare instructions and/or renderings of any Lego model?..Or just trying to
mimic the real life thingies that exist because of the very different
necessities of the real life (like inventory tracking, mold designation,
product traceability, SPC and so on) that not so much needed in virtually
any virtual universe, including ours.
And another thing. I already said before many times, but again, the part
numbering system using original TLG scheme SUCKS. It sucks because it is the
result of very different necessities to run a very complicated production
process, not creating a good looking/categorised part library for a computer
program. Part recognition could be much more easier with appropriately
descriptive and STANDARDIZED names. If you (we) created a new thing (I mean
LDraw or any other Lego CAD software) from the scratch, you (we) also must
create the required susbsystems from scratch, too, considering the
necessities of the case, of course.
By the way, regarding with one of the posts, are there *really* people who
memorizes part numbers?..
