I will be surprised if there is a 7xxxx number stamped on a part.  I
think the stamped numbers will always be in the simple-part range (4
digit and 3xxxx).

Not that I think this should affect the outcome of this discussion or
anything, ...

...I might disagree with that point...

... but there is at least one part that has a 7xxxx number stamped on
it.  The gold insectoid eye (i.e. the radar dome) has 71967 stamped on it,
where as the normal Trans-Antifreeze and TransDkGreen ones are stamped with
30208.

Well then; Surprise!   :-P

:-P, yourself.

The following 7xxxx numbers are embossed on elements:

70163 Metal Counter-Weight Wedge
70942 1x2 Tile, Top Center Ball: Chrome
70969 Mini-Figure Exhaust Pipe, Right: Chrome
70972 Mini-Figure Exhaust Pipe, Left: Chrome
70973 Figure Bucket, Holes in Bottom: Chrome
71014 Mini-Figure Longsword: Chrome

Wow.  Blows my theory.

Do we know if, in these examples, the numbers are color-specific?  Have
there been number-stamped parts released in more than one tone of
chrome[1] (so we can compare)?  I'd say that could have an impact on the
outcome of this discussion.

[1]  Yes, Todd, I realize it's not *chrome*, it's some aluminum stuff.
But 'chrome' is still the general term for the process, whatever the
actual material.  Besides, if Joshua uses the term, it *must* be OK.
