Well, didn't we decide that we all love it? :)

I'm trying to complete a report addressed to potential new site owners
that lists our (we LUGNET users') concerns for the future. I'd like
for it to include a wishlist with suggestions. In the case of NNTP, I
might have a couple bullet points like: NNTP is priority level "X" and
here are a few suggestions for simplified support.

I think it's a really nice feature to have (and a great differential
between LUGNET and other boards), but for me, SMTP support is more
important than NNTP.  Not just because that's what I use (*grin*), but
because everyone these days knows how to use email, and sadly, NNTP does
have a higher barrier of entry.  Once you do learn about it, it's
awesome though.

Do -any- of you know of anyone/anything/anyplace that can help? (Yes,
that was an intentionally vague question, sorry.)

I think we might be able to find many volunteers that want to help.  But
requiring someone full-time poses a really big problem, as far as I can
tell.

I still am curious if rss-to-nntp converters are any good. I'm
guessing they're not because the rss feeds do not come with enough
info to take advantage of a typical newsreader's more powerful
features. Am I correct? Anyone tried it? I admit, I have not.

Not sure what an RSS-to-NNTP converter would do?  An RSS (or atom) feed
only shows the last X messages, while an NNTP client expects to be able
to ask the server for an arbitrary range of messages in a group?  And
yes, RSS doesn't have the context information that allows proper
threading, but that should be pretty easy to add.

Is there any such thing as a beefy rss feed?

Beefy with context info?  Not that I know.  And not dynamic (that can
allow you to see messages 50-95 in .general), AFAIK.

I'm not sure which problem we're trying to solve though - RSS/SMTP/NNTP
all serve similar, but different needs.
