In lugnet.starwars, Dave Johann writes:
TPM was meant to be a picture of the Old Republic, just as it's starting to
crumble. It was meant to show the Jedi in the height of their grandeur
and ability. It was meant to show political maneuverings of a
pre-emperor Palpatine.

Very true. It is intended to show the fall of the Old Republic, the skillful
connivings of a little known senator from Naboo, and how one boy can have such • a
dramatic effect on the fate of the universe.

It's the FIRST CHAPTER, people. Who quits reading a book after the first
chapter, declaring that the book sucks?

Me, if it's one of the Kevin J. Anderson books. Fortunately, the other SWEU
writers actually know what they are writing about. Timothy Zahn comes to mind.

What?!  Anderson does a far more competent job than Zahn.  I swear Zahn thought
he was writing Trek novels.  Lets see he describes Turbolasers as a beam
(like phasers) in stead of bolts, he gave and X-wing a crappy sub-space antena
instead of a hyperwave transceiver.  Zahn was the first EU writer and
conseqently the least scruitinized.  (Why does everyone in Zahn's books have
shimmery hair?)  Don't get me wrong he writes good plots but he is really bad
at the details.

[snip]

I should point out that audiences as a whole are getting...dumber. If you • don't
spell everything out for them, they just won't get it. Audiences would rather
see a 2 hour music video with special effects galore than a 2 hour great
story.

Yup, very annoying isn't it.

Apparently Palpatine's maneuverings were so skillful they went
unnoticed by many of the critics and me-too critics out there... then again,
the critics hated the original movies as well.

Critics should be ignored. Their training is irrelevant. Go with your gut
instinct and quit listening to what the 'paid professionals' (bribed folks • with
connections) tell you.

I will admit that TPM had its problems with acting and perhaps people
had trouble following the plot... but it's not the horrible mess that the
me-too bandwagon likes to preach about.

Granted, Anakin whined far too much for my tastes, but he is a kid raised as a
slave on a desert planet. He had reason to whine. Jar-Jar had no such reason.
Pull the lightsaber out of Qui-Jonn's rear and the acting their might have • been
worth watching as well.

I suppose I was able to follow the movie because I cared about the story
to begin with... so maybe one of the problems lies in the film's inability to
easily convey its plot.

Exactly. I truly enjoyed TPM. I felt the story was far surerior to ANH and • ROTJ.
Jar-Jar was what killed it for me. Remember- 2hr video vs. plot. Which sells
more tickets? The video. This is also the reason you can't find the 6 hour
version of Dune. Only the 2 hour version is readily available.
