Well, it may be important/necessary, but I never felt it their relationship to
be very well defined, expanded, or altogether interesting. There's nothing
really intreguing about their friendship... But relationships like Vader/Luke,
Leia/Han, and some others actually intice me to watch intently. There's real
meat to their relationships, whereas Luke/Han is kinda boring. Anyway, I'm not
contending that it's an unimportant relationship, but it's not the kind of
relationship that makes people want to watch movies. It's of the same quality
as Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan kinda... unexplored, uninteresting, but important.

Oh definitely! There appears to be hardly ANY backstory to TPM-- unless perhaps
you read all the literature, etc. As a movie, though, it gives you no clue that
there even really IS a backstory. Not even that it needs a lot of it, just
enough to HINT that there IS one... barely anything about Luke's father is
mentioned in SW, but it's enough for the viewer to build an image in their
mind... JUST enough to make it interesting... Kinda like Tolkien-- there's a
PHENOMENALLY HUGE amount of backstory, but you only get bits of it when you
read Lord of the Rings...

Well, it didn't really need to be a connection to any person, I suppose, but
SOME hint of who this guy was other than 'evil sith guy'... I kind of would
have liked to envision it as he's been secretly off-ing Jedi for a while now,
and this is their first glimpse of their enemy, or perhaps he's got revenge
purposes on the Jedi because they hurt him in some way... SOME hint of
character would have been nice...
Now up to $.04...

| (...) Er, I'll have to disagree wth you there. Han's opinion of Luke goes from "Watch your mouth, kid, or you're going to find yourself floating home" to "You're pretty good in a fight. We could use someone like you." He's offering to make Luke part (...) (25 years ago, 2-Jun-00, to lugnet.starwars)
