I don't see this as a problem. I think one of the real problems is that
people went to see TPM, expecting it to be a stylistic copy of ANH: a
swashbuckling adventure against a powerful Empire.

That's not what it's about.

TPM was meant to be a picture of the Old Republic, just as it's starting to
crumble. It was meant to show the Jedi in the height of their grandeur
and ability. It was meant to show political maneuverings of a
pre-emperor Palpatine.

It's the FIRST CHAPTER, people. Who quits reading a book after the first
chapter, declaring that the book sucks?

Unfortunately, I think people paid too much attention to the special effects
and missed a lot of the story. Even people I know who are usually into
dramas and plot missed many of the plot points around pivotal
characters... they were like, "who? I don't remember that." Then they go
on to talk about how it was all special effects.

This is my statement to those people: If you can't pay attention to the
story, then quit complaining about how bad the plot is.

Apparently Palpatine's maneuverings were so skillful they went
unnoticed by many of the critics and me-too critics out there... then again,
the critics hated the original movies as well.

I will admit that TPM had its problems with acting and perhaps people
had trouble following the plot... but it's not the horrible mess that the
me-too bandwagon likes to preach about.

I suppose I was able to follow the movie because I cared about the story
to begin with... so maybe one of the problems lies in the film's inability to
easily convey its plot.

(...) <snipped> Agreed. TPM is about a different time. I didn't expect it to be a copy of any of the originals, in fact I liked it a lot. Here's another thought, in the 'dark times' that we see during the height of the Empire, friendship may be more (...) (24 years ago, 31-May-00, to lugnet.starwars)

I've been meaning to post this for some time. I think one of the major problems with The Phantom Menace is that it is not a 'buddy movie.' In the original trilogy, you have several strong friendships/partnerships that aren't present in TPM. Examples (...) (24 years ago, 31-May-00, to lugnet.starwars)
