Wow, you're nice. As soon as I can detect a telemarketer, I say, "No thanks,"
and it's doubtful they even hear me say the end of the word "thanks" because
the phone is probably already back down[1]. I do that no matter how many times
they call, or else if I think it's them again, the machine takes it. And I
always ask who it is/who they represent before I don't give my name.
I always keep it short cuz 9 times out of 10, they're interrupting something
more than just loafing about.
If you think I'm being mean, consider what's worse: just cutting to the bottom
line (getting to "NO" quickly), or keeping them on the line with no intention
of buying (which means you waste their time too) ?
If I know the business in question to be a catalog business (such as Sears)
I'll hang on the phone and just listen cuz they've been known to make calls
when orders arrive.
And BTW, I never offer any other info or words, lest they somehow stumble onto
some other [non-]phone idea/tactic to irritate me.
I gotta admit that if/when you call me, until I know that you're a personal
friend, I am in charge of the conversation.. no one else.

when replying, spamcake by phone is still spamcake, unless of course you're in
Montana, where it's "sellin me sumpthin on the tell-ya-phone".

[1] I've discovered a way to detect them that seems to work 99% of the time,
but will not post it here, should one of them read it.
