I guess, since the - does nothing to the original designation and if there
is only one model in the instructions the - denotes that.

I hope that's clear enough :)  This system would also allow official
alternate models without instructions (ie those on the back of the box)
to be included when someone figures out how to build them.

I disagree.  We should not offer the 'official' alternate models on the
back of the box for download, or at least not in the mpd.  We're concerned
about the main model(s) with instructions here.

This could lead to giant MPD files for every set, though, making me
wonder if ZIP wouldn't be a better format.  (Maybe both?)  With ZIP, you
could also create a directory for every model's submodels.  Then you
wouldn't be limited to only 3 characters for naming all the components.
eg:

I would go against zip and for mpd.  MPD is directly viewable and you don't
need an external program not related to ldraw to unzip them.  It may be a
few kb larger, but kb isn't a lot.

Unfortunately, using ZIP means the files will not be directly viewable as
MPD is.  You would have to download and unzip instead of just opening
LDLite from the browser.  Maybe MPD could be improved to support
directories?  Or does it already?

The thing is LDraw and LEdit don't support directories.  So the only hope
here is to have the models viewable only and have LDLite support
directories.  If LDraw and LEdit don't support them, I would disagree with
using directories.  The current set naming system would keep set files
together in the LDAO file manager as well.
