I dont think I did. I think I pointed out, quite rightly, that its the
height of arrogance to say weve got it right.

It isnt the height of arrogance to claim that anymore than it is the height
of arrogance to claim we dont have it right. That is -->Bruce<--s point.
That is also the problem with moral relativism, but I digress.
Getting back to weve got it right-- lets not forget about what I asserted
that we got right-- namely, the embracing of Freedom and Democracy. Yes, it
is good and right to embrace those ideals, and all nations should do the same.
It was not an exclusionary statement at all-- there are many countries that have
gotten it right by embracing those ideals. I was not claiming superiority
over all countries, merely over those that have not chosen to adhere to those
ideals. Last time I checked, Canada embraced those ideals as well. So what
exactly is your problem?
Why even respond, unless you are prepared to argue that these ideals shouldnt
be embraced? As I mentioned previously, I made no assertions as to American
culture; that I believe in any stretch of the imagination that it should be
emulated. It is the cause of hatred by Muslim extremists. They point to our
culture and say, see, this is what embracing Freedom and Democracy leads to!
They are correct to see major problems in our culture, but incorrect in their
conclusions about Freedom and Democracy.
Our problem is that we have the freedom but not the values to temper it.
Freedom has come to be understood as free to do what the hell I want and screw
you! Everybody wants freedom, but no one is willing to do what it takes to
ensure it. One of the key tenets of freedom is personal responsibility.
