In lugnet.lego.direct, Jeff Thompson writes:
In this one small case ("pirates sold well at introduction, so it was
madness to discontinue them") I disagree.  At least my guess assumes
that there's a rational explanation (ie they weren't selling well
later on) rather than assuming that it was sheer madness

I am willing to give the "sheer madness" argument more credence than
yourself. But I'll allow that your reasoning could be sound up to a point.
But I tend to think that TLC is quite out of touch with what consumers
really want and what they will actually purchase, or at least they have been
for some time now.

We know TLC is losing money all over the place, and there is surely a reason
for that however much one wants to credit their "clever" marketing
strategies and diversification into other product lines and businesses.

I would argue they are paying the price of abandoning "system."

I think the advent and popularity of the internet, and Lego sites on the
internet (official and fan alike), has really changed everything in terms of
TLC's possible market and they are being quite slow to catch up with it's
import -- and yes, this is just my opinion.  Still, I think this view has
evidence to support it but I won't go into it because it's not my job.  I am
just an enthusiast for the Lego stuff of yesteryear, as many of us here are...

...And we hope we are finally having an effect on what TLC decides to bring
to market.  I am not ape to get garage doors, but many people are -- to me
that suggests that if they were available, many people would be buying them.
Maybe not at $20 like on eBay, but certainly at $6-8 for a normally priced
accessory pack.  I have some on the way from Europe as I write, because at a
more or less normal price it's worth it to me to own a few of these items.

Make of it what you will -- you'll get the last word.
