I do consider Playmobil to be a major competitor of LEGO's, in terms of
idea space if not in terms of marketshare, and there certainly is a
lot of similarity between certain Playmobil themes and LEGO themes.
I think the "borrowing" may go both ways, but to some extend I think it's
the natural result of both toy companies covering similar ground.
Pirates and castles are a natural for any minifigure-based toy company
to model. And while some of the lines are strikingly similar, I
don't see much room for "direct rip-offs" to occur between the
companies. Playmobil has been making plastic knights on horseback
for a LONG time. It's LEGO that has moved closer to Playmobil
rather than vice versa, in my opinion, as LEGO has wandered away
from its contruction-toy basis to being oriented around the minifig
to a very significant degree.
