One short note beforehand: If you consider this reply mindless
criticising, tell me so. But it is intended to hint at something you
might not have noticed and thefor be unaware of.

Jan and I are still working on this. I'm not sure it's a
communication problem exactly, but it's certainly an internal
problem. It's a long story saved for another day, but we are trying
to get this solved.

It is indeed nice to hear that this is still being worked on. My last
impression was that the list you gave us was the final thing, as you did
not step up to clarify the numerous/repeated questions that arose from
your post (except for one that was unrelated to the list itself).

Here I come to a point that hinted at in Part 1: The way you (Community
Development) communicate with the "outside".

One common mistake there is that you and your team members regularly
fail to reply to a direct communication. This is something that should
not happen. Communication 101 says that you should at least acknowledge
receipt of information. Even better would be reply telling what you are
going to do with this information, and even better would be an
information on when a reaction is to be expected.

When I ask you or Jan about X, I don't expect an immediate answer in the
likeness of "Of course, X is going to...". That would be nice, but we
are talking reality here and mor often than not you have to dig for
information, too. But a simple "Yea, I got your question, you are not
the first to mention this, and we are working on this. Expect a post on
Lugnet in a few weeks" would be an excellent answer. Even a "Read your
suggestion - and it is bull$&%$& of the finest" would be better than no
reaction at all.

I once had an idea how AFOLs could help Lego. I mailed this idea to
Kate, but I never got a reply. Later I learned (not from her) that my
idea was discussed internally (with her, and the idea credited to me,
that's why I got the information from someone else in this talk that
they were talking about my idea). I am still not aware of the outcome of
this, though. I is not that I claim author- and ownership of such a
simple idea, and I'm not here to claim royalities. But a simple mail
stating "We discussed this idea, and we came to the conclusion that..."
would have been fine. The community has a lot of ideas, but unless there
is some feedback on them, we are not able to see what is possible and
what is not.

A recent case was that I sent Jan information about a trademark abuse
case. When I got hold of him in the chat, I asked him if he got my mail,
and he replied yes, and that he forwarded it to the legal department,
and that he has not heard again of this. A simple "Got your letter,
forwarded it to the right person" would have been fine as a reply to my
mail...

OK, now you (and propably a lot of people in Lugnet) might ask how I
would be in a position to talk about communication manners, but hey,
someone has to ask... ;-)

Yours, Christian

(...) Actually, I think that this note, as well as all of your other multi-part replies are wonderful examples of how to best have a useful conversation. I'm happy to participate in these as long as the discussion goes on. It's the ones where I/we (...) (19 years ago, 14-Mar-05, to lugnet.color, lugnet.lego, FTX)
