It is not just a matter of switching colors for most people who have a lot of
old and new gray.  It is that TLG is VERY stingy when it comes to producing
parts in specific colors.  Take the 2x2 classic windows for example.  In gray
they were only found in 1 early 80's set, the European only #7740 Intercity
train.  None seen since in any sets, and these are going for $4-$7 in Bricklink.

I agree and would love more of these windows.  Unfortunately I have heard that
this window mold can no longer be used.  Would anyone from LEGO wish to comment
on this?  Widely used pieces such as this window should be reproduced when the
mold wears out.  I know this has probably already been done atleast once (for
1970's-80's sets) but we would all love these windows in light grey, yellow,
blue, green, orange, etc.

Ben,

I don't think the 1x2x2 classic style window will be retired any time soon.  The
reason is the same reason that it is still in production.... a large number of
the Legoland Parks Miniland buildings have the 1x2x2 windows in them.  I believe
what you are referring to as having been retired is the older mold variation of
these windows.  There are actually 3 main mold variations to the 1x2x2 windows.
The 1957-70 "long ledge" (protruding window sill) variety, the 1970-92 "short
no-ledge" variety, and the 1992-present "tall no-ledge" variety.

Karl-Heinz Vogt, a longtime German Lego collector/builder has an excellent
comparison of all 3 varieties on his website.  Here is the page on classic Lego
windows.  Scroll 2/3 of the way down until you come to 2 small yellow classic
windows facing each other, followed by 2 1x2x2 red windows facing each other:

http://www.vogt-com.de/fenster.htm

The 2 yellow windows are (left) the 1957-70 variety and (right) the 1970-92
variety (although this particular yellow window was discontinued in 1979).  The
2 red windows are (left) the 1970-92 variety and (right) the 1992-present
variety.  It was of this left mold variety that the #7740 Intercity Train light
gray 1x2x2 windows were made.  If they made them again (either light gray or
bley) it would be of the right mold variety.  So I believe that is the reason
someone told you the mold was discontinued.

The difference between the 2 mold varieties are so slight, I have never bothered
separating the windows by types 2 and 3.

Interestingly enough, below these window comparisons is another picture
comparison (from the top of the window) of the hollow stud (1958-present)
windows, and the full stud (1957 only) windows.  This would make a 4th window
type.

As a followup, I too would like these windows available in other colors.  When
one looks at how many different colors the 2x4 bricks (for example) are now
available in... I think I counted somewhere about 38 different colors in
Bricklink.  And yet TLG has not produced Lego windows/doors in any colors except
for the basics.... red (common), white (common), yellow ($.50-$1.50 each), blue
($1.00-$2.00 each), black ($8.00-$16.00 each), gray ($5.00-$8.00 each).  The red
and white are in production, the blue and yellow were in production a few years
ago, and the black and gray were in production 20-25 years ago.  Would it kill
them to produce these in other colors?  No, they probably just have some
parts/color Director in Billund that won't allow it.

Occasionally I get on my soapbox and talk about how TLG hasn't had a decent
window/door "SYSTEM" since 1987 (the year that the remainder of the classic
windows were discontinued -- 1x4x2, 1x3x2, 1x1x2, 1x2x1, 1x1x1).  But it sure
would be nice to have a system of some sort.  Now we not only have to deal with
different styles of unmatched windows (1x2x2, 1x4x3, 1x4x5, 1x4x6), but also
different glass tints, and colors.  Trying to get a matched set becomes
difficult, if not impossible.  But this won't change, because most AFOLs seem
ambivalent.

Getting off my soap box again.
