Im kind of surprised at the level of discussion about this list - although not
too surprised, I guess, this being Lugnet. But I wouldve expected this amount
of disagreement about the first such issues list presented to TLG by the
Ambassadors. More specifically, the video that I wrote and Steve Witt put
together for an executive presentation last year, which was later shown at
BrickFest 2006. (See this thread for more info:
http://news.lugnet.com/fun/community/?n=437)
That previous list only included a few examples of what (some) AFOLs like about
LEGO, what (some) AFOLs want from TLG, and what (some) AFOLs think TLG should do
in the future. These were all topics discussed by the Ambassadors, but Im
responsible (guilty) for the video. I didnt hear any dissent then about
speaking for the community, although I expected to. The video did not include an
AFOL-specific wish list, but it did emphasize the following points:
- Make & Create is a step in the right direction (back to basic building)
- Props for sets with multiple copies of coveted parts
- Big opportunity seen for a la carte element purchases (LEGO Factory)
- Ambassadors should be allowed to present more info from TLG to fans (this has not happened - there was a glimmer of hope, but it was extinguished)
- TLG should instigate a LEGO = Quality brand campaign to distinguish themselves from the competition
- Props for including AFOLs & customers in various business processes
- Threat to TLG: low-quality competition
- Threat 2: Quality problems (e.g. colors, mis-molding, etc.)
- Threat 3: Discontinuing core product lines (specifically 9V train)
Comparing the above to the latest list, I still prefer the one above. Its
targeted toward TLG rather than fans, and is less granular. Most of the recent
list items are either personal preference (like Martian pieces, themes, conflict
vs build, etc.) or trying to tell TLG how they should run their business
(availability in different countries, consistent pricing across regions).
Numbers 1, 2, and 9 (9 being almost too granular but it hints at a bigger issue,
overall gender bias) are about the only ones I personally would present to TLG.
As for number 10... thats strictly TLGs problem. If theres a leak, its TLGs
responsibility to either plug it or work with their fans to de-emphasize it.
(Ive been through both sides of this and have had lots of conversations with
many people in the community and within TLG. I feel fairly strongly about it.)
Now, having said that... the list on the sidebar is by the Ambassadors, and I
dont feel that my approval or disapproval (or that of any other non-Ambassador)
is necessary for them to present it to TLG. Its their distillation of community
attitudes, rather than a direct representation of what any given AFOL might
think. I know how hard they work, and Im not belittling the effort at all. I
thank them for posting this report.
Part of what Ambassadors do is squeeze out the prevailing attitudes of their
various communities like an orange, remove the pulp, and serve the juicy
deliciousness to TLG for their enjoyment. Its not up to us to drink it. The
Ambassadors cant help it if TLG might be in the mood for cranberry juice
instead. At least its a voice heard.
But thats about as far as I can wring that metaphor.

Previous LEGO Ambassador

These issues, regarding LEGO products and services worldwide, should come as no surprise to anyone, as they have been brought to the Ambassadors' (...)
