I'd be curious about hard numbers as well. In the past couple of years that
I've been involved with train shows, we've probably shown to a couple thousand
people at each show. This is just based on my estimation though, as I'm not
privy to any of the official numbers. We also have only done small to
medium-sized shows. If we were able to show at larger venues such as the
Amherst Railroad Society's show (it's invite only for displays, unfortunately),
we'd be showing to 25,000 people or more during that weekend.

I wonder about this one as well. One of the top ten things we get questioned
about at train shows is "Where do you buy them?" In other words, people are
interested in buying them, but they can't find them. Since we're at train
shows, showing to train fans, I doubt many of them run out and buy tubs of basic
brick for the simple fact that they can't find the train items to go with it.
On the other hand, I have had a couple of people come up and tell me about the
L-gauge layouts that they've started in their basements as a result of seeing
what NELUG can do.
We've done another show, however, which was not marketed as train specific. The
public is invited to bring their own MOCs for display. Based on the MOCs
brought last year, and those that were displayed this year, there was not only
an increase in spending, but an increase in creativity. Since our main display
for this show was our train layout, and it's the first time anything like it had
been displayed in the state, I'd have to say that we made an impact on the
spending habits of the people in that area.
Personally, I'd love to do more shows that were not train specific. We have a
lot of people in NELUG, and interests range across all themes. I'd love for
those who aren't train-heads to be able to display their creations.
