Very similar to my situation, actually. My friend wanted to start an ISP so
he could have net access after college and not have to pay for it.

There was a time a few years ago when it was possible. 56K modems really
raise the bar, though; it means you (the ISP) need to have a digital
connection to the telco. (Not unreasonable, but a lot higher
barrier-to-entry.)

(...) Eep, yes. This is exactly what got me into Linux in the first place. My friend was trying to start an ISP running NT. They were having trouble, so since I'd done some work getting PPP to work on the ancient terminal server at the small college (...) (25 years ago, 4-Jan-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
