Just realized that might sound bad.  Let me elaborate, and yeah,
this may show how dumb I've been to stick around, or it may show,
for those who know me, that I'm paranoid about going without
insurance, and my wife only recently got her permanent position with
benefits at UT.  I didn't begin to feel justifiably mobile until
very recently, and at that point I was finished with the classes and
needed only to study with my buddies to take the tests.  I also
moved to a new dept with new, better responsibilities, and started
gaining experience administering a large multi-server network
servicing over 500 NT and Macintosh workstations.

But back to the "other reasons".  Sorry if this reads like a resume.

In Fall 1997 I got a new job and a raise working as a support
technician in a group that supports the entire campus for dial-up
access (6,000 customers) and the on-campus student population for
ethernet access in the dorms (about 2,500).  Did a good job.

Spring 1998 I was asked to temporarily take over as lead technician
when our lead tech was transferred to another group.  Purely lateral
move, in typical government fashion.  Same job duties as before, in
addition to managing a team of 4 full-time employees and probably a
dozen part-time students.  During this time I was sent to all the
MCSE classes (well, 5 of them - I declined to go to the Net
Essentials prep class since all they do is read the book to you and
I had better things to do).

Summer 1999 after about 14 months of being promised a raise or job
audit with no tangible results I took advantage of the mobility
within our division provided by a massive reorganization to move to
my current job, taking care of the academic computer labs on campus.
During this time I continued to study and prepare for my exams,
fulfilling the commitment I made to my former department head who
approved the funding for my training in the first place.  My job
audit, which should finally happen after the holidays, may end up
reclassifying me as an exempt employee (it better or I walk) and
should end up significantly increasing my salary.  We'll see.

Whew.  Now I just need to polish that up in resume form and include
the stuff I did before 97 and see if it can take me anywhere.  In
the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy all the training I can get.

(...) You got me. I'm still very much a casual Linux user. Maybe now that I'm almost finished with the MCSE I'll have time to actually sit down and do some reading instead of just hammering away and reading an occasional man page. (...) Well, there (...)
