I know this is kinda late in the thread for adding comments, but I have had
two experiences with missing pieces lately:

1 - An Outback airstrip I bought from KB was missing a 1x2 corrugated gray
brick that I must of search an hour for (thinking I dropped it on the floor or
something). I replaced it with Baylit...not knowing customer service would
replace it.

2 - Deep Reef Refuge bought from a different KB (if I recall) was missing an
anchor or maybe a larger black piece. I can't recall. But in its place was
something that was extruded in black...but didn't resemble any piece that I
could think of. I guess the added weight of this oddity allowed passage through
quality control. I replaced the piece through Baylit again. I sure wish I knew
that I could call customer service.

Anyway, we all know that there are many small extra pieces in today's sets. Is
this to ensure that the smaller pieces don't get lost? Also, is there a pattern
to the placement of small parts. It seemed to me that all visors were doubled
and all 1x1 round plates had 1 extra in each of the sets colors. However, in my
more recent purchases only the 1x1 round plates pattern has stayed true. Any
other patterns noticed?

(...) Actual reason is probably that the 1x1 round plates (there are a few other parts which sometimes come with an extra) are very close to the tolerance of their scales, so they put an extra one in, and set the limit to account for that extra (...) (25 years ago, 29-Nov-99, to lugnet.general)

The only occurrence of such a thing in my whole life was a box of 6332 (Town Jr Police Headquarters) which I won from a promotional lottery by a TRU in Istanbul. There was a 1x6x5 brick missing and one trans green/black window block (the newly (...) (25 years ago, 16-Nov-99, to lugnet.general)
