anyway, so I think I'll be getting the MCDBA first.  2 Exams to go

This is the part where I scream in horror and recoil violently.

Adminning MS is bad enough, but MS databases... Are you _sure_ you
want to go that way?

I want to learn - period.  We have more SQL Server implementations
on campus than anything else, especially Oracle.  So yes, given my
present circumstances, I am sure I want to go this way.  I could
decide to start working towards some sort of DB2 cert (assuming
there is one) but if I did it would be a purely paper-based cert,
since I wouldn't have a real system to work with - so what's the
point?

governmental educational institution, I don't know.  I'm sure if our
legal dept could have crafted some sort of "we train you, you stay
here for 2 years or pay us back and we don't have to increase your
salary by a dime" contract they would have.

They probably haven't thought of it - I know of other university
admins who get those clauses for their training.

They have thought of it.  We've heard talk of "they're working on
making this commitment-based" for about a year now - still nothing.

I would say there's not much incentive for the employer to send their
secretaries on certification, given that most certs don't really teach
you anything practical.

Not sure about the "anything practical" side, mainly because I've
been completely self-taught until I started working on this, and
I've still managed to _learn_ quite a bit in my certification
process.  'Course, I had a foundation on which to build.

As for the secretary thing, from what I understand it is a self-prep
thing, so I'd imagine most bosses that find out their secretaries
get a 9% raise had nothing to do with their employees being prepared
for the test.

Not that I would care - 9% won't quite cut it for me at my current
rate anyway. :)

Better'n what you have now.

Heh, true.  Still, 1.09xCrap is still Crap.  :)

Well, I'll leave the projection system for when we settle down and
buy a house.  But I have a DVD player in my laptop.  :)  And it does
output DD 5.1.  :)

It does? I need to get me some cash, I think.

About $4,500.  Luckily, I didn't pay for it. :)

(...) That's one line of reasoning. Given the tales of woe I've been hearing from sysadmins all over the world, though, anyone with half a clue tries to move to unix adminning as soon as humanly possible. You've certainly got the necessary clues, so (...) (25 years ago, 25-Dec-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
