I stand corrected. With the caveat that Darwin had no part in the phrase
"survival of the fittest". Evolution was postulated before Darwin, he
simply came up with an explanation for the mechanism behind it. His
evidence was in large part from living species, not fossils.
I was answering more that the fossil record is consistent with evolution
through natural selection, but that is not quite the statement Jon made, and
is a less sure thing in any case.

I agree. There is virtually no debate in science on whether there is
evolution (including macro-evolution). The particulars, yes.
