2) Does the fossil record support macro-evolution as a mechanism - survival of
the fittest, a life-form progression producing creatures better fit to survive?

Yes

I thought that the fossil record does not show any evidence of survival of
the fittest. It is my understanding that the fossil record does show ample
evidence of evolution per se, but gives no reason why. "Survival of the
fittest" is a catch phrase from Darwin's theory of natural selection
explaining the evidence of evolution people were finding in fossils.

I stand corrected.  With the caveat that Darwin had no part in the phrase
"survival of the fittest".  Evolution was postulated before Darwin, he
simply came up with an explanation for the mechanism behind it.  His
evidence was in large part from living species, not fossils.

I was answering more that the fossil record is consistent with evolution
through natural selection, but that is not quite the statement Jon made, and
is a less sure thing in any case.

In my opinion debating the existence of evolution is akin to debating the
existence of gravity. It does exist. How it works is the real question and
the question Darwin was answering in his theory.

Jonathan

I agree.  There is virtually no debate in science on whether there is
evolution (including macro-evolution).  The particulars, yes.

(...) Hardly - but that shows you just how easliy you've bought into the theory. If my statement isn't sufficient for you, please write one, and I'll address it. Please be concise. -Jon (24 years ago, 22-Jan-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
