I think it depends on the auction format and location, but for the most

that didn't know, if you run an eBay auction without a reserve price,
you *are* allowed to bid on your own auction once. Now, I can't imagine
any seller who would (in my not-so-humble opinion) be insane enough to
insult his/her buyers by doing that kind of evil instead of using a
reserve price auction, but then my opinions and sanity never really
matched up very well. :)

I would never shill.

I did put a reserve price on the auction, though.  Maybe one that is
too high, given the slow bidding, but then again most eBay bidding
takes place in the last few hours/minutes.

I used to hate reserve prices, and I still don't like them very much.
But when it comes right down to it, I made several very public
statements about being willing to sell or trade that 6274 and had no
real takers.  I'd like to convert the 6274 to cash but below a certain
amount it isn't worth it to me to sell it - I'd rather keep it because
it is cool.

And the way eBay's system is setup, if I list my item at a high price
I pay a high listing fee, whereas if I make a high reserve and it
doesn't sell I don't pay the selling fee.

<snip> (...) That is precisely the kind of situation for which a reserve price is meant. I'm usually not a fan of reserve prices either, but they are indeed a good alternative to high minimum starting bids, as you pointed out. <snipped him pointing (...)
