I think Northern Ireland has some chance of escaping it's cycle of
violence, but in that case, the cultures are comparatively similar,
there is a basis in rights (though not as strong as the US), and the two
groups are probably closer in economic power.

I’ll admit to being a little irked by this. What has brought about “peace”
in NI is the realisation that violence could only get the terrorists groups
so far. The IRA (and its Loyalist counterparts) has just as little regard
for “rights” today and it did 10 years ago – take a look at how they police
their own community.

The UK and Irish governments know well who the IRA and Real-IRA leaderships
are, and who does their dirty work for them (and their Loyalist
counterparts). The difficulty has always been collecting evidence to put
these people on trail whist respecting their rights as individuals. And I am
talking about the most ruthless of individuals – many of whom are supported
by your countrymen.

Compare that approach to justice to the way your government is acted (both
domestically and overseas) since Sept 11. I noted that over the weekend your
government has started force-feeding terrorists suspects.

Perhaps the USA should adopt the UK model, and respect rights of *suspects*
a little more? ;)

You have 72 hours to evacuate the middle east and then we are (...) (22 years ago, 1-Apr-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
