Just some super-quick thoughts on this ongoing problem...

How can the U.S. send crystal clear messages about aggression when our hands
are dirty in Afghanistan?

Short-term solutions will not work in this conflict, not that I disagree
with your goals for peace. Peace is what we all want -- Israelis out of
Palestine; Palestinians out of Israel, the U.S. out of Afghanistan...
We need negotiators for both sides that can come to the table without
copious amounts of blood on their hands -- basically, this should leave
warmongers like Sharon and Arafat out of the equation. Both of these guys
should probably be tried for both ordinary and war crimes.
We need negotiators that recognize they ABSOLUTELY cannot get everything
they want for their side. They shouldn't come to the table with "dream"
lists, but rather with a sense of realism and an honest desire to arrive at
a COMPROMISE solution.
Negotiations should proceed with an understanding from the outset that the
goal is to create two states -- one Israeli and one Palestinian, each with
guaranteed lands and international recognition of self-rule.
The international community of countries should band together to condemn
EACH and EVERY instance of violence from either side -- without regard as to
whether the action is proactive or retaliatory. All current financial
support to either side should stop until a lasting peace agreement is
reached, and then begun again only on the basis of need tied to equal
treatment of both countries.
The city of Jerusalem should probably fall into the administrative hands of
an international non-profit consortium or something like that, in the same
manner that we incorporate cities in the U.S. (not that I like it, but
Jerusalem is kind of a special case situation). This might be one of the
few legitimate uses of the power of the U.N. if it isn't considered too
politically hot to handle the job.
That's my 5 minutes on it...
