see, look at that. ALL those people out there, waving... THATS what no
one here can change.

Okay, but IMO that's a second, separate issue from "the fall of Lugnet",
although it does have influence upon it.  The question is how do you think
it's influencing Lugnet?  If you think users like ourselves are burning out
on Lugnet and LEGO in general, then are you saying we're dragging the place
down?  It's time to kill off the old coots and leave the fresh blood to
carry on?  There may be some truth in that---perhaps the users who arguably
care the most are the ones most pooping on the party (with threads like these).

Or, do you feel that because the ones who may care the most no longer care
and are drifting away, that only a smoking crater will be left behind?

On another on-line forum I frequent and contribute to actively (analagous to
posting MOCs) far more than I ever have on Lugnet, I've seen similar things.
The traffic in the on-topic groups is very light, but very on-topic, and
some excellent stuff is still coming out of them.  But in the off-topic
general discussion groups, there is 100 times the traffic, much of which is
people ranting about how the site has died and it's all over and whatever
happened whine whine whine.  I keep telling them to post into the on-topic
groups (or at least read the things) and maybe it wouldn't be so bad.  The
problem is many of these people loooooong ago stopped using the site for
on-topic discussion and instead use it as a glorified chat site.  Their
lamenting that the "site has died" is because they're bored with the *off*-topic
discussion and has nothing at all to do with the site and the *on*-topic
content.

I think some of the same can be seen here on Lugnet.  Rtltoronto, anyone?  ;]

So if re-entering the "dark ages" is causing some users to withdraw from the
on-topic groups here, and they only post there about issues related to the
"decline of Lugnet", then yeah, that's not helping much, is it?  If instead
the faders are just, well, fading away quietly, then they'll be replaced by
new blood without bumming them out.

There's also something to be said for people being intimidated by the awesome
MOCs they've seen.  Years ago people often said they didn't bother posting
MOCs because they couldn't compare to what other people posted.  Today I
still see the same.  Maybe losing a few awesomely skilled builders would
help encourage the lurkers more?  But I think that's a bad way to encourage
participation..., more like we should just be more, well, encouraging.
Contests always seem to work well.  Hell, it probably wouldn't hurt the skilled
builders to post a few "crappy" MOCs once in a while, unfinished works-in-
progress, things in unmatched colours, etc.  :]  Another idea (not sure I
like this one yet) is to create some "beginner" groups where people can
feel more comfortable posting their creations, and where skilled builders
are there only to help provide suggestions and encouragement.  Remember there
are a lot of young builders out there too, who probably don't see much of
a home here.  But we could make one.

So back to your point.  Yes, nobody can change people drifting away. I did
it once, probably will again, it comes and goes.  That's not necessarily
something that needs fixing.  You can't force people to keep at a hobby
they're not interested in anymore.  But you can help Lugnet retain some kind
of relevance for the people, new and old, who *are* interested.  And that in
itself will retain more of the people who might otherwise drift away.

its true,  Lar does read EVERY post here.

Psst, y'know what?  I think he does it just to remember what his name is,
because it's posted here so many times.  :]

how many people saw THAT coming?  see, I'm old too.

That doesn't prove you're old..., it just means you were a fool sooner
parted with your money than many others.  :]
