I don’t post much on Lugnet anymore, though I visit every so often. I had to reply to this, though. I think Calum expressed the exact way I feel. A lot of the fun has been taken out of LEGO. The community is a scary place and the products...although they are improving, I’d still rather be in 1995. To be honest I miss the old rec.toys.lego. Though I’m sure I’ll be practicially destroyed for this, I think that Lugnet hurt things a lot. I dislike how there are so many different newgroups and sections; I can’t check every single one, nor do I want to. I miss being able to just click on the RTL bookmark and see whats going on in the Lego world. Oh, I’m not blaming Lugnet for anything; I think it’s great, and everything has been with best intentions, I’m sure. But nowadays I look at it and it’s just like...blah. What happened? I don’t care if its the fault of the community or LEGO or Lugnet or all three, all I know is that every other time I visit this website I get a sinking feeling.

The big point of LEGO is, of course, to build models. So, more recently I have quite enjoyed embracing the power of the brick to make some of my own cool stuff; I’m currently in the middle of a very large mecha. When it’s done, I suppose I will post it, but I won’t have the same kind of rush to do so as I may have a long while ago; I barely consider the community at all anymore in terms of Lego. What I will do is show and talk about it to my few enthusiast friends, where I don’t have to worry about BS getting in the way of what should be a simple and fun hobby. And as much as I love building, I miss actual sets. There are practically no cool themed sets to buy. Oh yeah, there are themes. But who’s going to buy that Knights Kingdom stuff to display it? It’s all about parts. I miss being able to buy a set, open the box, spill out the polybags, and make the model half giddy, impressed with the final result. The Imperial Star Destroyer was good, but come on. Wheres the cool themed sets with minifigs? When was the last time we got a Neptune Discovery Lab, Message Intercept Base, Fort Legoredo, Gas N’ Wash Express? Nowadays I never look at sets and go “oh, coool”, I grimly study the box for signs of good pieces, looking for excuses to buy something like in the old days. Usually, I lose the battle and go to Bricklink.

Bah. I have rambled. I’m usually a smidge more eloquent and organized than this; go figure that the one time in that blue moon I post I’m tired and weary. I suppose the point I’m trying to make is that the overall hobby has changed drastically, and not for the better. Not at all.

(...) I don't know about that. Lugnet enabled the community to grow to proportions rtl never would have. But those same proportions cause us trouble now. (...) That's true--but there's some amazing stuff out there, especially this last year or two: (...) (20 years ago, 22-Dec-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto, FTX)

(...) Nothing wrong with Larnet :^) Maybe if the moon turns Sand Red (at least missions to 'Mars' would be cheaper) (...) Definitely a 'Pay-per-view' event, have the contracts been signed yet, where's Don King Donuts when we need him ? (...) Ever (...) (20 years ago, 21-Dec-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
