"Jump the shark" is an American based slang, describing the fall from glory...
when something popular/useful/interesting/engaging..... has lost its luster....
fails to impress or declines in its usefulness or impressiveness. Some would
argue that is can also imply that something was doomed from the onset, although
that is a much more cynical look at the expression.
This term has varying levels of use, and is actually ordinated from a reference
to a tv show best left forgotten where the main character actually jumped a
shark with his motorcycle to boost ratings, which of course, never worked, and
hence the use of this phrase.
Wow, apparently *I* was paying attention to my grade 10 Marketing class.
