I'll try not to... no promises tho... :)

I consider myself a SW fan, but by no means do I know as much as many of • you...

What is the purpose of the B-wing and A-wing? (vs. the X-wing and Y-wing)

It depends on how you mean... if you mean as actual ships, the B-Wing is a
heavily armed figher/bomber and the A-Wing is a lightly armed reconasaince
ship.  The A-Wing is supposedly faster than the X-Wing, though it's weapon
systems aren't nearly as good.

If you mean in terms of why they were designed for the Star Wars movies, it
was to give some new eye candy to wow audiences with during the Battle of
Endor.

I realize the x-wing is a mainline fighter and the Y-wing is a bomber...Are
the A+B wings just updated versions of those types, fighter +bomber?
(I thought I saw someone say the Awing was adept at combatting
Tie-interceptors, I believe)

Yes, A-Wings are the "rebel equivalent" of TIE Interceptors...
(A-Wing = TIE Interceptor)
(X-Wing = TIE Fighter)
(Y-Wing = TIE Bomber)
(B-Wing = TIE Advanced)

DO all of the rebel fighters have hyperdrives?

Yes.  The reason behind this is that rebels don't have the luxury of carting
around large numbers of fighters in huge capital ships like The Empire does.
Most TIES don't have hyperdrives because they're only used near the capital
ships, and they dock with them before the capitals ships go into hyperspace.
The Rebels need ships that don't require the support of large capital ships.

Thanks for baring with me...

uhm... I dunno about that... I'm still fully clothed.  But, I have no problem
bearing with you... ;)  (ok, maybe that was a bit of a flame...)

(...) Ouch, I would have to disagree with you on that last one. The B-wing is no where near as fast or agile as a Tie Advanced, but it does carry way more armor and weapons. TIE Advanced were one of the latest developments in the TIE series and were (...) (24 years ago, 8-Jun-00, to lugnet.starwars)
