It's always bothered me that Chewie didn't get a medal placed around his neck • by
the Princess.  He risked his his life also.  What's up with that!?

I want to say I remember the novel mentioning that Chewie got his later
because nobody could reach over his head to place it around his neck.  It's
not just Carrie Fisher that would be at a disadvantage.  I'm 5'10" and I can't
reach and easily maneuver as high as 7'2" (or was he 7'4" in costume?
Whatever, it was up there.)

The medal ceremony is a brief, formal scene without dialogue.  R2 adds a
little lightheartedness, but dragging out a chair or having Chewie get down on
one knee probably would have broken the solemnity of the scene.  There is a
good chance that they tried these things.  Realistically, I have to say Chewie
not getting his medal was done for reasons of practical cinematography and has
nothing to do with Wookie rashes, dignified Princesses or anything else
pertaining to the characters themselves.

I remain skeptical.  Chewie could have kneeled or bowed low.  It was careless to
put Chewie in the scene (particularly since the whole audience knows that he
deserves to be honored), and then fail to adequately recognize his bravery.
Lucas gets an idea, and then bulldozes through with out really considering the
overall harmony of how an issue is resolved.  I've no sympathy for the
cinematography or cost arguments, as valid as they may be; Lucas decided to
write in a medal ceremony; Lucas decided to include a deserving Chewie in the
scene; therefore Lucas should have drawn from the stores of his great talent to
figure out a way to gracefully honor Chewie along with Han and Luke.  Lucas, its
called Directing!!!
