Ah...the venerable & eternal SW race card debate. I don't think that Lucas
meant any harm by drawing on the stereotypes; that is, I don't think that there
was any malicious intent. I realize that many folks will say that the
Nemoidians didn't sound Asian at all, but I admit that I have a hard time not
feeling like their voices are some kind of corny rendition of the voice dubbing
on old campy martial arts movies. I actually find the Watto stereotype
amusing...he doesn't have to be associated with any particular ethnic group. I
just picture some crusty oldtimer; the only thing missing is a cigar. Anyway,
while I understand why the Ewoks were there, I just don't think an adequate
reason for why Chewie didn't get the respect that he deserved will ever be
offered. If Lucas didn't have Chewie receive his medal with Han & Luke because
that was never originally in the script...well, that's still lazy directing, to
say the least. Anyway, this Chewie issue is IMO yet another illustration of the
fact that Lucas is not a man to be bothered by details. Please, Lucas, don't
direct another movie.
