As for subtitles, those are there for the viewers, obviously--I've always
perceived that some people in the Star Wars universe speak several languages
and simply prefer to communicate in their own; Han understands Greedo, Greedo
understands Han, so why bother speaking another language?

True. From personal experience, people in real-life prefer to talk in their
native toungue if they know that the person will understand them. I've seen
lots of families in which the parents constantly speak to their kids in one
language, and the kids reply in another; it's not unusual in billingual
families. I suppose that the SW-characters know that the other creatures
understand their language.

Shiri is right. Here in Canada we are a bilingual country (well, really only
parts are). My skills in speaking in french have only really developed in the
last few years but my understanding has always been strong. I remember in high
school many conversations with teachers who were francophone and spoke to me in
french while I would reply to them in english. I even have conversations now
with people where we will slip back and forth between english and french
without even noticing. Don't forget, it is always easier to understand a
language than it is to speak it.

Also getting back to SW, perhaps Han could not pronounce Greedo's language and
vice versa. Outside of Lucas, who's to say?

Candy, taste it again for the first time.
