It's kind of like "everyone does things their own way," which is clear
noun/pronoun disagreement. These colloquialisms have been around for at
least decades and will no doubt ultimately be absorbed into "correct"
American English. Still, for those with a preference for more formal
language, whether in spoken or written communication, the more strictly
grammatical usage is generally the better choice.
There was an ugly and very petty exchange (in which I regretably
participated) on RTL a few years ago about split infinitives and double
negatives and the (in?)correctness of each. Lots of verbal bloodshed and
carnage, but in the end it came down to "write your resume or project
proposal using lots of double negatives and see how well it is received."
