"Compassionate conservative." When push came to shove, he ran as far right as
he could and tried to declare McCain a liberal (I would hardly declare Clinton
a liberal, much less McCain).

People are always trying to paint their opposition a way that suits them. For
example, you invariably say "left-liberal" but never say "right-conservative".
I don't wonder at all about how Republicans vote. I thought McCain too openly
courted cross-over votes and that there would be a backlash. But the general
electorate decides who wins the overall election, not just Republican faithful,
and Bush may find that he painted himself into a corner.

Clinton and Gore are namby-pamby left-leaning moderates. McCain is a
namby-pamby right-leaning moderate. You have to be pretty far right-wing to
consider any of that lot as "left-liberals".
McCain wan't an outsider in the sense that he is a career politician and very
much part of the establishment. At the same time, the established order in the
Republican party all ran to deify Bush without really understanding the
"compassionate conservative" act that they thought would make him "electable"
in a general election was just an act. Bush is the representative of the party
machine, McCain wasn't.
I'm sure Larry said they are all politicians, but to quote (paraphrase most
likely) a previous message by me: Liberal, conservative, democrat, republican,
ya can't trust one of 'em.

I don't question what he did - you can't win the general election if you don't
win the nomination. But in doing so, he revealed himself to be more right-wing
than he wanted to admit. I'm merely speaking in a strategic sense rather than
a judgmental one.

| Bruce (And all you McClain supporters out there), I am just wreathing at the Microsoft debacle, and now we go in on the McCain debacle. What is it? Is this not decided already? This sounds like a leftist whine fest. "Ah, gee whiz, he lost!" I have a (...) (25 years ago, 4-Apr-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
