It is obvious you have never seen people beaten down by their socio-economic cicumstances as I have. Come to West Oakland, CA and see the situation and tell me that people are absolutely choosing their lifestyles. Now who is being naive?

As an aside I guess I could also ask you what is so bloody Xtian about you when it is I defending the more Xtian approach to the problem of the poor? What is better: to believe, or to actually act?

You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you about that. So what if we have the hightest incarceration rate in the world. Should there be some magical limit?

Not for basic crimes, but that is hardly the problem -- we are not swamped with thieves, rapists, and murderers; but rather by categories of criminals we have more or less invented fairly recently. Why are yopu ignoring the available statistics? Criminals are semi-coddled because most of them are minimal security federal prisoners working for UNICOR, see: http://www.unicor.gov/ (which is also plowed ground here).

We as a society have certain norms about expected behavior. You violate that and you will be punished. Don’t like it? Move to where that kind of behavior isn’t shunned.

That is asinine. The “norms” you speak of are common law crimes, and again NOT the problem.

How simple and naive you are! It sounds really good on paper, but drugs, gambling, etc, have a very real tendency to destroy lives.

All of these activities are readily available, legal or not. And again, plowed ground.

LOL Good one! Why do you think criminals steal in the first place? Because they would rather risk an easy score than to actually work for a living! You are naive!

I think you are confusing “tweaker” type thieves with proper thieves, and they are not the same creature at all. Drug addicts with a jones do not steal the same things, or exhibit the same behavior, as bank robbers.

(...) You defend the more Christian approach? You make me laugh. Your idea is to have the government try and solve the problem, wasting billions of $$$ on beaucracy. How many trillions of dollars have we spent in the past 40 years on welfare (...) (21 years ago, 29-Jul-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
