I feel obliged to add that we probably haven't spent "trillions" of dollars on
welfare unless of course we include the ongoing billions handed to big
corporations, and that doesn't really qualify as 'trying to wipe out poverty.'
Further, even if public assistance *has* reached the trillion-dollar mark, it's
still a drop in the bucket compared to corporate welfare.
For example, Halliburton has received a massive outlaying of Federal
assistance in the form of non-bid government contracts. If the Dubya
Administration had opened up the bidding, taxpayers might have saved (let's make
a conservative estimate of) $4 million. With that same money, the Fed could
have paid full tuition for four years at Penn State for more than 140 people,
and that's just one example among countless.
How, I ask, does a fat donation to Halliburton (and, by extension, to Dick
Cheney, who still draws a paycheck) help improve life for American taxpayers?
Dave!
