We have been hearing about some very scary arrests and detainments in
the past weeks. We MUST avoid letting paranoia destroy our freedom.

Like what?  Am I missing a bigger trend?

I was just reading this news item:

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/Midwest/09/21/video.child.beating/index.html

I think it is extremely scary that a woman has been arrested on the sole
evidence of a surveillance camera, and her sister is being charged with
accessory to a crime. While the incident caught on tape might appear to
be a criminal offense, we have little more to go on.

Um...what could be more damning than video footage?  What on Earth _would_
you consider reasonable evidence?

I haven't heard anything inappropriate about the handling of this case from
the article you sighted or from other sources.

This actually seems pretty cut and dried to me.  An ignorant social misfit
abuses her kid on film and admits to it.  So she's arrested and her kids are
protected from further abuse.  What is it exactly that troubles you?

Chris

And I am in the unique position of agreeing wholeheartedly with Chris.

There was a wee bit of a ruckus in LA a while back, and a granny watching
the news footage of the looting and pillaging saw her grandson doing said
mischief.  She reported him to the police, and an arrest was made.

I believe that video footage is quite damning, for you really can't get out
of it--it's there, caught on film for all to see--try backpedalling what was
caught on tape.

Now here's a situation in Ontario (and prob'ly elsewhere)--red light
cameras--the camera takes a pic of a car if it drives thru a red light.  A
ticket then gets mailed to the owner of the car.  The owner rants and raves
about his rights being violated, especially if he or she wasn't driving said
vehicle at the time.  As well, people say that these cameras invade their
privacy.

I like to think that these cameras would make driving safer--less folks
driving thru red lights can only be a good thing, but if it is an
infringement of privacy, then I don't know...

Anywho, agreeing with Chris... wow.

(...) Don't get me started on these cameras... they're bad. It's not the rights violation claim (which is false, unless you report the car stolen because it actually was stolen, you're responsible for what people do with your property), it's the (...)
