Lego is wasted by keeping it pristinely in a box, and by it's

once removed from the box, are original.

Great point! From a LEGO builder's point of view, I look at unopened or
unused LEGO as a waste of fun, creative and exciting possibilities!

I think Eric slightly overdid it in his last post by calling Bruce out, as
if creativity makes a difference in validity of opinion. But I do see where
Eric is coming from in the sense that serious builders just don't understand
all the serious collectors. I don't mean to offend, but I must say I don't
hold much esteem for the serious LEGO collectors. I don't see the point of
amassing all the sets, themes, figures and so on, and keeping LEGO in it's
retail form. To me, LEGO is for building stuff and the set on the box is
merely an example of stuff that can be made. I see LEGO as an art medium and
a tool for the imagination (in fact the latest slogan is "Just Imagine..."),
not a product to remain in the set it was sold in.

So, in a general sense, I think LEGO builders see LEGO collectors as
consumers, not craftsman, model makers or artists. As a builder, it is NOT
interesting for me to listen to collectors go on about how they own this or
that set from such-and-such a year. I admit that I sometimes think to myself
"Okay, if you like LEGO so much let's see something original YOU made, buddy."

On the flip side, I have no doubt that the LEGO collectors feel it is shame
to open LEGO, that it is better left sealed in it's box so the "value" may
increase as time goes by. I assume they feel LEGO builders are crazy for
throwing away LEGO boxes, instructions and catalogs from sets and mixing up
all the pieces. They may feel the LEGO builders lack business sense. Maybe
they're thinking "Okay, if you like LEGO so much, how come you don't have
set blank-blank, buddy." I'm making assumptions of course, but my point is
that it goes both ways, though I side with the builders.

(...) Why *side* with either? Why are there sides *at all* for that matter? That is what is baffling me. This isn't a territorial war, is it? Both "sides" can "win", can't they? I'm a builder AND a collector and there is nothing wrong with being (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jun-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) I hold Lego in extremely high regard - you are confusing an honest analysis of Lego on the "collectable toy market" with a derogatory attack. That Lego makes a poor "collectable" is a *good* thing, in my opinion. You need to go back and (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jun-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
