In lugnet.castle, a bunch of people wrote some stuff.

I personally like the idea of including resurrection of characters if this
is a fantasy game.  However, I would place huge restrictions on it.

The kind of magic that can bring back the dead would be tremendously
powerful magic (for presumably a similar level of magic could kill without
question).  I would recommend considering such magic, but only in the hands
of certain elite NPCs.  The average town Temple would not even have the
resources needed.  But somewhere (maybe at the MM), there could be a cabal
of high priests, or perhaps a powerful Oracle who could predict (by the
control of the game master) where some great quest would help to find some
one-time use artifact that could raise one person from the dead.  And the
cabal/Oracle would of course first demand a large payment for their services.

And then, the artifact of resurrection, even when found, is such an archaic
device that few can operate it properly.  When used, there could be a
percentage chance that it only returns the character in the form of an
undead (ghost, skeleton, zombie, mummy, etc.).  And even if he gets properly
raised, chances are the character should suffer some stat or attribute
penalty for having been dead (so you can never really get the character back
fully).

I think if you make it tough enough, most players won't bother with it when
it is equally fun to create a whole new character.  But maybe once in a
while, the GM could create an adventure around the idea (eg, maybe a great
noble must be raised because only he can tell the PCs where the secret
fortress is).

Anyway, that's my thoughts on the subject.  Feel free to agree or disagree.

(...) I agree, (...) Sounds like Necromancy, I myself think that this sort of stuff should be included in the game, gives it more of an edge, take the Necromancer for instance, who wouldn't want a spell, where you can raise a skelaton or two to do (...) (22 years ago, 28-Jan-03, to lugnet.castle)

(...) The problem with ressurrection lies in the infinite amount of technicalities and 'what if' questions, which would result in headache for the game master. So basically, if someone gets killed, there isn't a way to ressurrect them unless in a (...) (22 years ago, 26-Jan-03, to lugnet.castle)
