Hmm, I was trying to get myself out of this discussion...
I for the most part would like to see the same picture David espouses.
The problem that I see is that when people make these little "nudges",
the "offender" takes offense and yells "why are you yelling at me?
You're not Todd and until Todd tells me off I'm going to say whatever
the I want to!" (ok, maybe not that bad). So now the one who just wanted
to nudge things is left in a quandary. If they don't respond, people
might assume that the community agrees with the offended offender and
that whatever really isn't a problem. If the nudger responds or anyone
else responds in his favor, then the issue blows up into a huge debate.
So the question is how do we create an environment where the little
nudges are accepted with grace, with perhaps a quiet post to
lugnet.admin.general asking if the particular "offense" really was
something inappropriate (and then how to have the default assumption
that when that post is not responded to by the admins that they in fact
consider the post inappropriate). Part of what needs to happen there is
for a set of nudgers to gain respect. This could be accomplished by the
admins appointing folks. It could be accomplished by the community
recognizing that this individual seems to be in tune with the desires of
the admins, and does a pretty good job of nudging.
David is probably also right in that folks should probably refrain from
nudging in groups where they really aren't active. In part, they may not
have the respect of that sub-community. The .loc groups in particular
are of concern here because they probably should be allowed to conform
to some degree to local community standards.
