I think a problem we AFOLs have is that our judgements of "classic" and
"legendary" are often confused with nostalgia. "Heritage buildings" have the
same problem.

I think to be truly classic or legendary a set would have to appeal to kids
today as much as it did to us.

Now I personally voted for the Yellow Castle but after I had done it, I
regretted it, because I realised I had been driven more by nostalgia for the
Lego of my childhood (1960s) than the belief that this was a set that would
stand the test of time. I then decided I should have voted for the
Barracuda, despite it being full of specialised parts (hulls, masts, etc).

I think it should be 'because it's full of specialised parts' rather than
'despite it being full of specialised parts'.

Consider that a reasonable facsimile of the Yellow Castle could be made from
most LEGO collections (possibly from a blue tub or two, plus a few other
bits and pieces) - it is, after all, mostly basic bricks - but the same is
not true of the Barracuda. The Barracuda has specialised parts, but they are
great parts, that are not common, nor are they easily substitutable.

Sure a home built Yellow Castle isn't going to be exactly the same as a real
one (you'll probably be missing the 2x2 steep slope corners and the figs, at
least). But from a distance, you'll have captured the spirit of it.

But a home built Barracuda is not going to get very close to the real thing.

Of course, the Barracuda parts are not going to be as usefull as Yellow
Castle parts would be for other projects, but after all, that's what we all
bought blue tubs for.
