Jake put it pretty well, professional and technical organizations are rife
with potential conflicts of interest if you look hard enough to find them.
What matters are actual ones.
To ignore that and suggest that Tim is merely selfishly insisting on being
able to stand for the StC and should stand aside in order to move things
forward... is to, I feel, completely miss the point here.

I suggested nothing. I was merely asking a question. Can you just answer it
without reading motives into it that dont exist? Is it really necessary to
be a member of the steering committee in order for suggestions on the
direction of the organisation to be heard and judged fairly? I would hope
not.

Hi Allister -
Thanks for that clarification. Actually, I was at a momentary loss for how to
approach the answer, but now after thinking it through I have something to say.
I would hope that whoever is elected to the Steering Committee would hear input
from the membership and consider/judge it fairly. That is what I plan to do
should I be elected. Its a community organization, and the leadership should by
nature be open to input from the community.
That said, the Steering Committee is by design a decision-making and
direction-setting body for the organization. The leaders are chosen by the
community to serve their interests. I believe my central role in the LDraw.org
project makes me a vital piece of the puzzle for kicking off the actual
organization. No, the world will not explode if I am not elected, but I am
confident in my vision [1] for the future of LDraw and dont feel it would be
adequately served without my holding a seat there. Whether you (all) are
confident in my ability to serve on the committee is a question only you can
answer. :-)
<personal view>
A more personal feeling perspective is this - Ive coordinated much of the
LDraw.org project (with a lot of invaluable help from great people!) since the
ideas conception in early 1999. Now Ive channeled the project to the point
where we are ready for a structured organization. Were I to be disallowed
categorically from serving as a formal leader of this which Ive been
instrumental to for so long, it would be a great disappointment - and in a way
it would be a slap in the face. </personal view>
Does this answer your question?

That said, Jakes post made a lot of sense (it came through just after I
wrote mine). Its probably the most pragmatic approach presented thus far.
For what its worth, I have no emotional investment in the final wording one
way or the other.

Understood. I was enlightened by Jakes post too - he brought up a few
perspectives that I hadnt considered. I think were all better off for seeing
his observations in the discussion.
Reiterating based on the point of this whole thread - on principle, for TLC
employees, I strongly support a mechanism of full disclosure of employment to
the membership, supplimented by a mechanism for accountability in actions that
will prevent conflict of interest from negatively effecting the LDraw community.
-Tim
[1] and at least up until now, people have supported that by deferring to me
as a key community leader.
