Basically, the number of T-pieces is one less than the number of cilinders. So with the same X and Y: X = Y - 1. That is, for the old ones that had only one tube going to them. This does not help you much in Canada, but the LEGO Outlet Store at Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, Virginia has quite a few of the Mag Wheel Master (with labels on the box from Legoland, California) for about US$ 30. Well, I've been thinking about this, and I think it's possible to do with an arrangement like the valve gear on your everyday steam engine. One thing I found with the old-style pneumatics, particularly the excavator, was that the down stroke was considerably easier, in fact, one had to pump very carefully if one only wanted a minor adjustment, otherwise the pressure of the entire (...) (25 years ago, 14-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

I do like the gear system you have on yours and maybe it is a question of insufficient torque to twist it around so I may have to (...) (...) Sure - it took about 6 weeks from start to finish to build the excavator, although I wasn't working on it all the time. Much of this was spend "debugging" and tweaking the model rather than pure creation as such; in that way it was a bit like (...) (25 years ago, 14-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)
