Sounds like we are of a similar age - I suppose there is a sort of of
"Golden Age" type thing when you look back on the models of the late
seventies. I think my favourites were the Mobile Crane and the Motorbike,
although I remember the fork lift truck, the small go kart, and the 8860
car chassis with great fondness as well. However, I can be certain I got
no help with them, as the rest of my family are not so great when it
comes to mechanical things! I used to really enjoy it when mechanically
minded people would visit our house, and I got to show the models to
someone who wasn't a mechanical philistine :-)

Perhaps it has a lot do with what you suggest, i.e. there was a more
logicial progression from "normal" lego to those Technic sets as you were
still mainly using the brick on brick method, with some extra stuff. I
also remember having some huge pre-technic gears with white axles,
although I have no idea how I got them.

The story you tell about the 6 year old is interesting - it could just be
that he was either too young for this type of lego, or simply not
mechanically inclinded. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just that
some people are better at some things than others. I have no idea if
I could have built the 8248 when I was 6, but I'd have loved to have
tried :-) I suppose much of this discussion indicates to me that it is
important to have a range of difficulty available. Not that you're ever
going to keep everyone happy, mind you!

(...) Yes, something did happen in the late seventies. The introduction of the "new style" technic (as opposed to the old style large gears and white axles) and the minifigures were both large events, especially with the addition of the space and (...) (24 years ago, 20-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Yes, this is indeed quite true. As many people have noted, children below the quoted age bracket on a set may very well successfully compile the model.
